The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national,
federally funded network of local crisis centers providing
suicide prevention and intervention services through a toll-free
telephone number: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) (1-888-628-9454 for Spanish-speaking callers). Its mission is to provide immediate
assistance to individuals in suicidal crisis by connecting
them to the nearest available crisis center in their area.

Released on November 1, 2005, this publication by the
IOM in their Quality Chasm series provides information
and recommendations for improving the quality of care in the
mental health and substance-use fields. The overarching
goal of this publication is to tailor strategies and ideas
from Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System
for the 21st Century, to reflect needs of the MH/SU populations
that are distinct from needs in the general healthcare system.
