Jim Kelly Elected NASW President

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has elected Jim Kelly, PhD, ACSW, LCSW as its president. With nearly 150,000 members, NASW is the largest professional organization of social workers worldwide. Dr. Kelly brings more than 25 years of social work education experience to the NASW presidency.

Celebrate National Foster Care Month

NASW is a partner with Casey Family Programs and 14 other foster care-related organizations to promote May as National Foster Care Month.  NASW wishes to honor social workers who have dedicated themselves to the children and families area of practice.

Survey of Social Workers Finds Families Ill-Prepared for Time, Expense, Emotional Toll of Caring for Aging Parents The first survey of social workers who provide services to sandwich generation women—women between the ages of 35 and 64 who are “sandwiched” by the needs of their children and their aging parents—found that this group, which typically shoulders a family’s caregiving burdens, is ill-prepared for the challenges of caring for older relatives. Social Work Safety

Jacks Family Tragedy Raises Concerns Among Social Workers
The Washington, DC, community was rocked by news on Jan. 10 that four missing children were found dead in a home still occupied by their mother.  Since then, disturbing information about Banita Jacks, her children, and many missed opportunities to help the family, have been covered in the national news.  [+more]

NASW Responds to Attacks by George Will and the National Association of Scholars
Following the release of an Oct. 14 syndicated column by George Will in the Washington Post, the NASW national and chapter offices have worked in partnership with various schools of social work to send letters to editors across the country. Letters have been published in response to the Will column which promoted findings from the National Association of Scholars. [+more]

Four Receive NASW National Awards
NASW has announced the recipients for its annual national awards program. This year, the association is honoring a social worker who has founded organizations to help Latin American communities, a former NASW president with numerous accomplishments in child welfare initiatives, a leader in providing services to the homeless and those living in poverty and a state legislator who has steadfastly supported human rights and worked to improve the lives of his constituents.

This year we are focusing on the future of social work and the need to recruit more social workers into the profession.  Our recruiting focus for Social Work Month in 2009 – Social Work: Purpose and Possibility – defines the social work profession.  People who become social workers do so because they seek a purpose to their career, acknowledging the many different paths upon which a social work degree might lead you.
